“As a family that enjoys travelling it was always very frustrating for me that the Sunflower lanyard was recognised around the world, however didn’t have a strong presence across Ireland. Some airports in Ireland have designed their own unique scheme - which is fine for the start of the journey, but totally worthless when arriving in the destination! ”
Regional Director - Ireland and Northern Ireland Tristan Casson-Rennie, lives in County Clare with his husband Scott and their three children Frasier, Brandon and Jacob. When their youngest son Jacob was placed for adoption in 2014, Tristan decided to step away from the railway industry and become the stay at home Dad. Jacob has Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and has worn the Sunflower lanyard since it was first introduced in 2016.
In 2021, Tristan established FASD Ireland, a not-for-profit that aims to raise awareness and provide support to families living with FASD in Ireland.
Tristan previously worked in the railway industry for 25 years, most recently as Customer Service Manager responsible for the route between London Euston to Birmingham and Liverpool.
“It’s fascinating to look back pre-aneurisms and at my time working in the UK, nonvisible disabilities were around me every day - I just never made the connection. Now having an invisible disability myself, I am passionate about as many organisations recognising the scheme as possible – not just in Ireland but around the Globe.”
Communications Manager - Ireland and Northern Ireland Scott Casson-Rennie, is responsible for the Irish social media channels, the Sunflower launch support for Irish businesses as well as the first point of call for enquiries in the region – from organisations wishing to join the Sunflower to anyone looking for Sunflower wearables.
Scott was previously Head of Engagement & Delivery at Charity, Adoption UK, where he managed the team in England providing support and services to adoptive families. He continues to be involved in the adoption and fostering sector with a global podcast and supporting adoption and fostering agencies and their families.
Scott informally joined Hidden Disabilities Sunflower in November 2021, and in March 2022 experienced two ruptured brain aneurisms – which resulted in 9 months of recovery. Now, mostly recovered, and a Sunflower wearer himself, Scott has formally joined the team in Ireland.
“I have lived with invisible disabilities all of my life having FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). I also live with anxiety disorder, dyslexia, ADHD, sleep disorder, sensory integration and other invisible disabilities that effect my day to day life. The Sunflower has provided me with a level of independence that I may not have been able to experience, and it is important to me that I am able to share this with others also living with invisible disabilities.”
Administration Assistant Maggie McHugh, is part of the team that represents the Sunflower in Ireland.
Maggie spends a large amount of her time supporting others across the globe who live with FASD, as well as being interviewed and speaking about her lived experiences.
"Supporting people with non-visible disabilities is important to me as I have friends and family with hidden conditions which has caused me to appreciate the daily challenges they face. From a young age, I have helped support my mum who has a non-visible disability."
Customer Services Executive Rebecca Mears, deals with all of our customer enquiries ensuring queries, questions or issues are resolved.
Rebecca previously worked for a leading IT company in the escalations department. She has also worked in large businesses in the private sector handling a wide range of account, technical and legal queries.
